Just as we all have unique abilities and talents, everyone is creative in their own way and will express their creative selves through different applications. How you choose to express your creativity varies from one person to another and also depends on your interests and passions.
Even if you don’t believe you are creative, by the time you finish reading this guide your perception about creativity may very well change!
The first thing to understand is that creativity doesn’t necessarily happen when we decide we have 20 minutes today to be creative. Our weeks fly by and that drawing is still sitting there barely started, or a recipe we were creating got abandoned by the wayside.
Creating Space for Creativity
Creativity happens in the moment, often spontaneously and needs plenty of open space to continue to grow in our lives. Just as a tree or flower needs the right soil and space to grow to its potential, so does our creativity. It needs to be nurtured and the right environment to thrive.
Due to our busy lives, oftentimes we are so caught up in day to day tasks and responsibilities that our minds become so full and we lose the opportunity to create the space for creativity to come through into our lives. We instead chalk it up to being, “I’m just not creative,” when this is the farthest from the truth! We lose out on the benefits, the joy and the happiness that follows when we do what we love and express ourselves creatively.
Here are 7 things you can do right now to help bring more creativity into your life!
Start paying attention to what excites you, no matter how simple or small.
Try something new. Go to a different store, drive a different direction, get out of your routine, take a class you always wanted to try.
Block off some time (at least 2-3 hours) with no obligations and let yourself just be. Do something fun that is not planned or scheduled or a chore. Go on a picnic, go buy some stickers, or cook a new recipe. Do something playful. Explore your inner child and give yourself space.
Write down 20 things you always wanted to do. (money, time, work is not a part of this equation). Discover your passions and interests.
Carry a small notebook with you and write down when something makes you feel inspired or an inspiration pops into your head. (ideas, words, phrases). Unblock Your Creativity - Journal Reflection.
Go outside and take some interesting pictures.
Look at the stars.
