10 Fun Ways to Promote Wellness with your kids during the Paris Olympics

The Olympics are a great opportunity to spend time together as a family, get together with friends, and create memories that your kids will keep with them for years to come. Here are ten things you can do to enhance your experience and bring wellness into your day.

  1. Cook or Bake Together - Bake something healthy and watch the opening ceremony with your family or friends.  See our  Apple Crisp Remixed Recipe for a healthy twist on a classic dessert.

  2. Eat a balanced diet - Be like an Olympian and eat three meals per day and healthy snacks.  See what Simone Biles eats every day here.  You can also try our My First Healthy Plate Bowl recipe and build a bowl while you watch the Olympics.

  3. Stay hydrated - Remember to stay hydrated throughout the day.  For an easy way to replenish electrolytes try our DIY Strawberry Lemon Electrolyte Drink.

  4. Exercise daily - Whether walking, playing sports, or stretching it's always good to move your body.  You can do core exercises at home that help you train for the sports that you love. For example, if you want to learn to surf you will have to be able to do a push-up on your board and jump to your feet.  Check out Barefoot Surf’s channel to learn how to practice a pop up at home and be sure to watch California native Griffin Colapinto from San Clemente compete in surfing.  He is known for being calm under pressure and never giving up.

  5. Rest your body and mind - Remember to get good rest and sleep so your body has time to relax and recharge. See our Bedtime Meditation to help wind down and sleep well.

  6. Think Positive Thoughts - Maintain a positive mindset and vision of yourself.  As children many Olympians imagined themselves being in the Olympics. They overcame many challenges and are constantly doing small things to improve themselves no matter how much they have mastered their sport. You can read Minnesotan born Gymnast Suni Lee’s inspirational story here. She encourages others to “Never let life’s setbacks stop you from going after your dreams.” What is something small you can do to improve your life? Is there a thought you can change? For example, if you want to get better at a sport, pick a time to play against someone who is better than you. Create a goal for this week, You can use our Morning Goal Setting activity to help you.  Be sure not to miss Suni Lee’s performances on the balance beam and bars!

  7. Encourage others - Build community and friendship by encouraging your friends and teammates when they may need help with something or are having a bad day. Tell others when they do an amazing job! One positive comment can go a long way.

  8. Strength train - Build strength and train your body. Check out Kids Strength and Conditioning and Find Your Heart Rate to get started!

  9. Play Volleyball - Head to the beach and play some volleyball!  If you need inspiration, watch volleyball player Miles Evans from Santa Barbara.  See if you can pick up some new techniques to help your game.  When you are out in the sun remember to drink water, replenish electrolytes, and wear sun blocking clothing.

  10. Watch together - Get together with your friends or teammates and watch an Olympic event together! Check out the official schedule. Make a healthy snack and electrolyte drink and be sure to check out breaking, the new sport this year.  Go here for a list of healthy summer foods.

We hope this inspires you to keep bringing wellness into your day.  So go get your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy the games!
